Facing a plumbing emergency and in a panic? Here’s the steps you should take while waiting for a plumber to arrive that can help the situation.

1. Shut off the water

The most important thing you can do as a homeowner in a plumbing emergency is to shut off your home’s water source. Your home’s main shut-off valve is usually in a basement or near the water meter or where the main water line enters your home. It’s a good idea to know where your shut off value is ahead of any plumbing emergency so you can go right to the source immediately.

2. Make sure you’re safe

If the plumbing emergency is putting you in danger, evacuate the house while you wait for your emergency technician. Major plumbing issues can cause water to mix with electricity and that is a dangerous situation. If you’re unsure about the safety of the situation, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

3. Turn off your water heater

Running an empty water heater can do damage to the tank. Turn off your water heater at the main electrical box and do the same for any other appliances that might have come into contact with water.

4. Assess the situation

After shutting off the water, locate the damage and make sure you provide your plumber with as much information as possible as to when you noticed the problem and the affected areas. Take photos or videos that might help your plumber or help with an insurance claim.

5. Drain your pipes

After shutting off the water, open your spigots and faucets to drain any remaining water to take the pressure off the damaged plumbing.

6. Mop up the mess

You can start to use towels and mops or clean up any standing water. Mold can develop quickly in drywall and other areas like flooring, walls and furniture.

7. Use a bucket to contain small leaks

If your plumbing emergency can be contained, use a bucket or towels to catch the water and prevent it from spreading.

8. Don’t attempt your own fix

There are some plumbing problems you can repair yourself like a leaky toilet but in a true plumbing emergency, your DIY troubleshooting can make the problem worse.

Plumbing emergencies like any other emergency can be a stressful situation. These steps give you what you need to minimize the damage to your home and keep you safe until your plumber arrives.
