A Must for Every Homeowner
Every responsible homeowner should possess a fundamental grasp of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in their homes. If nothing else, having a basic understanding of your heating and cooling system lets you know when it’s time to call in the professionals.
Central Cooling
Most homes have a split-type central cooling system. This system has two separate (or split) components – the outdoor component and the indoor component. The outdoor component consists of the condenser coil and the compressor. The indoor component is the evaporator coil, which is typically installed with your air handling system (usually a furnace).
Keep in mind that when two objects at different temperatures come in contact with one another, heat will flow from the warmer object to the cooler object. So, when warm air comes in contact with the indoor evaporator coil that has been cooled by a refrigerant from the compressor, the air’s heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil. This is how the air is cooled. The refrigerant is then pumped back to the compressor for the process to start anew, and the heat trapped by the refrigerant is released outdoors.
Central Heating
The furnace is the primary heating appliance for many homes. It typically consists of a burner, a heat exchanger, a fan, and a flue or an exhaust. Heating systems can run on either gas or oil with some modern hybrid systems able to use both fuel types efficiently.
The burner in your furnace burns fuel to create heat that is then passed through a heat exchanger. When cool air blows across the heat exchanger, it absorbs the heat energy and becomes warm. It is then blown throughout your house through the ductwork that is part of your central cooling and heating system. And that’s it – your home heating and cooling system 101!
