With the new year finally here, it’s time to make sure your home is up to date. Since your HVAC system is one of the most frequently used appliances in your home, it’s important to make sure it is well-maintained. The last thing you want is any HVAC problems only a few days into 2020! To help you out, the pros at American Air, Plumbing, and Electrical have prepared an HVAC maintenance checklist, so you can start the new year (and new decade) off free of any HVAC issues.

  • Replace Filters

    1. One of the best ways you can make sure your HVAC system is up to date is by consistently replacing your air filter. A clean air filter prevents unhealthy indoor air quality and maintains consistent airflow throughout your home. It also prevents other, bigger problems such as a frozen evaporator coil, which can lead to expensive repairs if ignored. According to the Department of Energy, it is ideal to replace your air filter once or twice every month.

    1. Duct Cleaning
The air that you breathe indoors circulates through your ductwork and picks up any pollen, dust, or allergens. If your ductwork is full of debris, mold, or even pests, your allergies might start acting up and your indoor air quality will worsen. To avoid starting 2020 off with allergies, consider having your ducts professionally cleaned. In addition, you can clean your vents and register yourself using a duster or your vacuum’s brush attachment.

    1. Check Thermostat
Inspect your thermostat to make sure it is working properly. If your setting is on “fan,” change it to “auto”—the fan setting causes air to blow through the ducts even when your system is not heating or cooling.

    1. Seal Up Your Home
No matter how up-to-date or well-maintained your HVAC system is, if you have air leaks around your home, your unit might not be as effective. Make sure you add weatherstripping around your exterior doors and windows and ensure your home is well-insulated—especially your attic since air escapes from there often. In addition, have a professional inspect your ducts to make sure they are well-sealed. Duct leaks can cause the conditioned air to escape, while outdoor air enters your home and worsens your indoor air quality. This can force your HVAC unit to work overtime to provide the heating or cooling you need.

  1. Check Your Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor condenser is an essential part of your HVAC unit, which is why you must keep it in good shape. Make sure any vegetation around your unit is well-trimmed and is within a 2 feet clearance of the condenser. Clean the fins by using a hose spray to clear out any debris or grass from the outer fins—make sure you don’t bend or damage them.
